This work addresses the excess of beauty and the paucity of space in Hong Kong. The packed and stacked bamboo cages of The Bird Market evoke the dense living conditions of the city. The poster on the wall behind, and the newspapers along the bottom describe Hong Kong's "cage homes": 6 x 2.5 foot wire mesh pens where many of the city's destitute must live because of skyrocketing rents. The images in the background shows a man sleeping in his "cage" - one of three stacked vertically. While I've overheard many lament the plight of these birds in their small cages in The Bird Market, there are men and women in this city living in far worse conditions, comparatively.
